Frequently asked questions
How many tiedowns does a skid steer or mini excavator need?
If the machine weighs 10,000 lb or more,
49 CFR §393.130 requires at least four tiedowns, placed as close as practicable to the front and rear, and requires articulated parts to be restrained and accessory equipment such as buckets lowered and secured. Lighter machines fall under the general cargo rules in
49 CFR §393.110 and
49 CFR §393.106. Weigh your actual machine, including attachments.
Chain or straps for equipment?
Chain is the usual choice for steel tracks, sharp frames and heavy machines. Straps work where surfaces are smooth and the strap is protected at edges. Either way, the combined WLL must reach at least half the cargo weight.
What size chain do you carry?
Our Grade 70 transport chain comes in 5/16" and 3/8" options with clevis grab hooks, plus 5/16" RTJ-hook 4-packs rated 4,700 lb WLL each. Match binders and hooks to the chain size and grade.
