1/2" Grade 80 Clevis Grab Hook — Elevated Capacity Alloy Hook at 7,100 lbs WLL

Grade 80 alloy steel sits a step above Grade 70 in the chain hook hierarchy — same physical format as the 1/2" G70 hook, but a higher-alloy steel formulation delivers a 7,100 lbs working load limit versus the G70's 6,600 lbs at the same chain size. The result is more capacity from the same footprint, which matters when assembly size and weight are constrained.

Stamped "G80" for field identification. Heat-treated alloy steel construction. Sold individually — the right buy when you're replacing one hook in an existing G80 assembly or adding a single upgraded hook to your chain setup.

G70 vs. G80: Choosing the Right Grade

Grade 70 (yellow chromate finish, "G70" stamp) is the standard for DOT/FMCSA commercial cargo securement and is what most flatbed operators use. Grade 80 (black or silver alloy finish, "G80" stamp) is a higher-alloy formulation that delivers more WLL per unit of chain size — 7,100 lbs vs. 6,600 lbs at 1/2" — and is also approved for overhead lifting when rated accordingly. If you're building a cargo securement assembly and already have G70 chain, stay with G70 hooks. Use G80 when you're building from scratch and want maximum capacity, or when your assembly specifically calls for G80 components.

Never mix grade levels in the same load chain assembly — the assembly's capacity is limited by its lowest-rated component.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WLL of the 1/2" Grade 80 clevis grab hook?

7,100 lbs working load limit. Grade 80 alloy hooks provide approximately 8% more capacity than Grade 70 hooks at the same chain size — useful when you need the most from a compact assembly or when your application specifies G80 hardware.

Can I use a G80 hook with G70 chain?

Not recommended — and doing so doesn't improve your assembly's WLL. The assembly's capacity is determined by its weakest link. A G80 hook on G70 chain is still a G70 assembly by chain rating. Keep your assembly's components at the same grade level to maintain consistent ratings and to comply with assembly standards that call for matched grades.

Is Grade 80 approved for overhead lifting?

Grade 80 alloy hardware can be rated for overhead lifting — this is one of the key differences from Grade 70, which is transport-only and explicitly NOT approved for lifting. However, not all G80 hardware is lifting-rated; check the manufacturer's documentation for the specific lifting rating and follow ASME B30.9 and other applicable standards. For this specific SKU (C1/280), consult the technical documentation that comes with the hook for its applicable ratings.
