5/16" Grade 70 Clevis Grab Hooks for Transport Chain
The 5/16" Grade 70 clevis grab hook is the standard end fitting for lighter-duty transport chain on car haulers, tow dollies, and smaller flatbeds, where 3/8" chain would be more than the load calls for. Each hook is rated at 4,700 lbs working load limit (WLL) with an 18,800 lb break strength and a 4:1 design factor, and is stamped "G70" so the grade can be confirmed at a glance.
Choose your pack size from the options above: 4 packs to outfit a new chain assembly, 8 and 10 packs for a small fleet, and 20 and 40 packs for shops that build or replace chain assemblies in volume.

When 5/16" Is the Right Chain Size
Chain size follows the load and the aggregate working load limit your securement needs. Under FMCSA cargo securement rules (49 CFR 393.106), the combined WLL of all tie-downs must equal at least 50% of the cargo weight. 5/16" Grade 70 hardware at 4,700 lbs WLL suits vehicles, small equipment, and machinery. Heavier loads call for the 3/8" Grade 70 grab hook at 6,600 lbs WLL.
A grab hook has a shallow throat sized to capture a single chain link and hold it fixed. Where you need to shorten or lengthen the chain on site, pair a grab hook at the anchor end with a 5/16" clevis slip hook with latch at the load end.
Heavy freight note: the 40 pack weighs about 32 lbs, and your cart will show a heavy freight note for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the WLL of a 5/16" Grade 70 clevis grab hook?
4,700 lbs per hook, with an 18,800 lb break strength and a 4:1 design factor. The 3/8" Grade 70 hook is rated 6,600 lbs. Always match hook WLL to your chain and to the aggregate WLL your load requires.
Can I use 5/16" hooks on 3/8" chain?
No. The throat is sized for 5/16" links, and an assembly is only as strong as its weakest component. Use hooks and chain of the same size and grade.
Are these hooks DOT and FMCSA compliant?
They are Grade 70 transport hooks stamped "G70" and meet Grade 70 securement requirements when used with matching 5/16" Grade 70 chain. Confirm your total aggregate WLL against 49 CFR 393.106 for your load.
Can Grade 70 hooks be used for overhead lifting?
No. Grade 70 hardware is for cargo tie-down only. Overhead lifting requires Grade 80 or Grade 100 hardware with a lifting rating.
What is the difference between a grab hook and a slip hook?
A grab hook holds one chain link in a fixed position. A slip hook has a wider throat that lets the chain slide to any link, so the chain length can be adjusted, and it adds a safety latch.
